Today it’s known as the Fido Outdoor Concert Series, the largest annual free outdoor concert series in Canada. But it all began back in 1998 with a little-known band named, Nickeback.
Since then the WSSF Outdoor Concert series has grown to host name like Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, NAS, and the Black-Eyed Peas. Not forgetting its local roots, the Outdoor Concert Series is one of the best places to discover new music from all across Canada and the US.
Over 20,000 people at a time rock-out to 100+ hours of free music at the base of Whistler Mountain, here’s our pick of the bunch for 2017:
1. Walk Off The Earth
Walk Off The Earth is an unconventional, multi-talented five-piece musical phenomena that is currently taking the world by storm.
Their independent spirit and awe-inspiring, DIY covers of famous songs by Ed Sheeran and Adele has catapulted Walk Off The Earth into global fame.
Her voice is her identity; her voice carries memories, vulnerabilities, pain, sadness, happiness, freedom, and herself. It’s her best friend and worst enemy.
The growls, whispers, and sighs of what’s been created, brings the musicto a whole new place. Paired with Ryan Guldemond of Mother Mother (co-writer/producer), Willa’s new album is the birth of an electro-pop heavyweight.
Not one to be boxed into any genre, Pham’s musical style is meant to be a fusion of various elements, combining electronic, hip-hop, down-tempo, and future bass into the beautiful meld featured on the Movements EP. The lead single “Movements”, has already amassed over 60 million streams aggregate.
5. Busty & The Bass
Busty and the Bass have come a long way in a short time. Casual house party gigs soon led to scorching live performances in front of thousands on stages across the U.S., Europe, and their home country of Canada.
The group’s natural chemistry and an ability to create a sound that Complex says is “best described as a lovechild between jazz, hip-hop, and electro-soul” has been a major hit with audiences, bouncing along and chanting “Bus-ty!” in unified delight. Even R&B legend Macy Gray is a fan of Busty and the Bass, praising their soulful living room session cover of her hit song “I Try” as “beeyooteefoh”.
6. The Leisure Principle
Starring an eclectic cast with a colourful musical past, the four protagonists courageously battle revengeful, distorted guitar riffs and terrifying flute solos while bass lines dance with polyrhythmic grooves.
Epiphany arrives when they realize they share a mutual love of music as an art form, discovering harmonic nuance through their differences and their ultimate goal, to serve the Song.
Where is the FIDO Main Stage
